‘The unicorn school outside Colesberg’

On 2 November 2022, the Daily Maverick website ran a long article about the HCET written by the well-known travel and advernture journalist and writer Julienne du Toit.

Titled ‘The unicorn school in the back-country outside Colesberg, Northern Cape’ the article is an extract from Karoo Roads III – The Adventure Continues, the latest in a series of books about the Karoo written and published by Julienne and her partner, Chris Marais.

The article — and chapter — are richly illustrated with photographs taken by Chris Marais over several years. They include the image above, which shows the HCET fleet of vehicles carrying learners to school.

Julienne and Chris are based in Cradock, and have spent the past 20 years researching and writing about the Karoo. To download the article, click here.
