On Wednesday 17 June, our Grade Sevens finally returned to school. Foundation Phase learners will return in July, and the remaining grades in August. Following extensive planning and preparations, systems were in place to protect learners, tachers, and HCET staff.

Social distancing is observed, in the quads, on the playgrounds and in classrooms. Learners and staff regularly wash their hands, and their temperatures are taken. Learners also pass through a disinfectant booth upon arrival in the mornings and when they leave in the afternoons.

According to Marié Botha, head of Umthombo Wolwazi Intermediate School, learners felt rather strange when they returned to school on Wednesday after months of lockdown. ‘Therefore, to get them back into the swing of things and make them feel more at home, we arranged for them to do colourful paintings related to Covic-19 on stones placed in the quads as markers for social distancing. They produced some lovely designs.’
