Bursary for top hospitality student

HANNELIEZE PERRIES, the top HCET hospitality student for 2015, has won a bursary enabling her to attend a Chef’s course at the Steyn’s Culinary School in Pretoria. The bursary is jointly funded by the HCET and Steyn’s Culinary School. The course last for six months, and is due to end in November 2016. From December onwards, Hannelieze is due to complete a six month practical training period at Fancourt Hotel in Knysna, which will provide her with accommodation and a basic salary. She is due to qualify as a chef in 2017.

Hospitality school graduation

At the end of April 2016, the HCET Hospitality School held a graduation ceremony at the Colesberg Golf Club for the class of 2015. Eighteen students graduated, and received City & Guilds certificates. The ceremony was attended by HCET trustees, students, and family members. The catering was undertaken by the student intake for 2016.

Computer skills

nosipho finalTHE HCET has begun to offer computer training at its hospitality training centre in Colesberg. The course is affiliated with Skillwise Computer Training, which provides simulation-based computer training for members of previously disadvangated communities in multiple learning centres across South Africa.

While still being adapted to local circumstances, the HCET course lasts for about three months, with an intake of ten students per course. Successful students receive an internationally recognised certificate in computer literacy.

Following the first course, a prize-giving ceremony was held at the Colesberg Gold Club on 28 April 2016. Nosipho Abrahams from Groot Poortjie Farm in the Hantam district was the top performer, passing with an average of 90%.

HCET graduate joins as ECD intern

plaatjies vertical finalAnthonique Plaatjies, an HCET graduate, has joined the Hantam staff as an ECD intern. She is working in  Lettie Martins’s class for three- and four-year-olds. She is also studying for her NQF Level 4 ECD diploma with the Custoda Trust in Delportshoop.

Anthonique, who comes from Lowryville in Colesberg, completed Grade 9 at Umthombo Wolwazi Intermediate School. She then matriculated at the Colesberg High School, where her boarding fees were paid by the Trust.

HCET receives donation from National Lottery

It will be spent on the ECD Programme, the Effective Parenting Programme, and the Youth Development Programme. Our heartfelt thanks to the National Lotteries Commission for this donation, which will help us maintain and improve these key HCET programmes in 2016-20157.

HCET Charity Golf Day 2016

ON 27 October 2016, SizweAfrica will hold a Charity Golf Day on behalf of the HCET at the Steyn City Golf Club in Johannesburg.

The event will be a 4-Ball Alliance. Participation will cost R12 000 per four-ball. This will include lunch, dinner, drinks, snacks, gift bags, as well as prizes and cart hire. A well-known and respected business leader who rarely makes guest appearances will be the guest speaker.

Green fees, prizes, food and drinks will be covered by SizweAfrica, the Steyn Golf Club, Giuseppe Plumari, and other donor companies. All proceeds from the day will go towards the HCET.

Steyn City has one of the best golf courses in South Africa, and traffic levels are fairly low. The golf course is always in excellent condition. Registration will be at 9 am.
